Sloanhoffer, Tang, Deal Earn First EAGL Honors of 2012 Season

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (January 10, 2012) – West Virginia sophomore Hope Sloanhoffer has been named the first EAGL Gymnast of the Week for the 2012 season. Maryland sophomore Karen Tang earned EAGL Specialist of the Week honors, while WVU freshman Beth Deal secured the EAGL Rookie of the Week award.

EAGL Gymnast of the Week – Hope Sloanhoffer, West Virginia, Sophomore

In only her second career all-around appearance, Hope Sloanhoffer scored a career-best 39.3 and finished second overall against No. 13 Penn State and Maryland on Jan. 8; she was narrowly edged out by PSU’s national championships individual qualifier Sharaya Musser (39.5). Sloanhoffer finished in the top four on each event, including second-place finishes on vault (9.875) and floor (9.85); her bars score of 9.775, good enough for fourth place, was the meet’s second-best score. She also finished third on beam with a 9.8 mark.

EAGL Specialist of the Week – Karen Tang, Maryland, Sophomore

Karen Tang’s collegiate debut resulted in a share of first place on bars at West Virginia with No. 13 Penn State on Jan. 8; the sophomore scored 9.85 and shared the event title with PSU’s Sharaya Musser and Madison Merriam. Tang’s score is UMD’s third-best performance on bars in the last four years. The next-best bars score that day was a 9.775.

 

EAGL Rookie of the Week – Beth Deal, West Virginia, Freshman

Competing in her first career meet, freshman Beth Deal nailed her beam routine in the WVU lineup’s fifth position and scored 9.825; she finished second overall outright and was only beaten by PSU’s NCAA championships individual qualifier Sharaya Musser (9.9).
